1Under the dim light of an oil lamp, a man sat at a desk in an old house.
在一盏油灯昏暗的灯光下，一名男子坐在老屋的书桌前。
2With a writing brush in his hand, he was busy writing on a piece of paper.
他手握毛笔，正忙着在一张纸上书写。
3It was early spring and the air was still cold.
那是早春时节，空气仍然寒冷。
4His hands were numb, but the task was so important that he couldn't stop working.
他的手冻得麻木了，但这个任务太重要，他无法停下工作。
5“It's going to take me weeks,” he said to himself.

6Several days passed, and he always worked deep into the night.

7His mother was worried about his health, and she sometimes brought him some snacks at night.

8Then one day, his mother came again.

9“I have made some zongzi for you!” she said.

10“They taste better when dipped in the brown sugar sauce.”

11“I hope you'll enjoy them. And go to bed early!”

12“Thank you, Mum!” he said.
“谢谢你，妈妈！”他说。
13His mother left and he continued his work.
母亲离开了，他继续工作。
14He felt a bit hungry, so he reached for a zongzi, dipped it in, and then ate it.
他有点饿了，于是伸手拿起一个粽子，蘸了蘸，然后吃了下去。
15When his mother later returned for the bowls, she was surprised to see that there was ink all around her son's mouth.
后来母亲回来取碗时，惊讶地发现儿子嘴边到处都是墨汁。
16“My son,” she said, “how were your zongzi?”
“孩子，”她说，“你的粽子怎么样？”
17“They were delicious!” he replied.
“它们很好吃！”他回答。
18“But you have ink all around your mouth!” she said. “You must have dipped them in the ink instead of the brown sugar sauce!”
“但你嘴边全是墨汁！”她说。“你准是蘸了墨汁，而不是红糖酱！”
19“Ah!” he said with a big smile. “But the taste is so sweet!”
“啊！”他带着大大的微笑说。“但味道可真甜啊！”
20The man here was Chen Wangdao, a scholar and educator.

21It is said that he was so concentrated on translating The Communist Manifesto that he didn't realize he was eating ink!

二、语法和从句分析
1. with + 名词短语作状语：“With a writing brush in his hand, he was busy writing”中 with 引导的介词短语作伴随状语。
2. be busy doing sth：“was busy writing”中 be busy doing 表示“忙于做某事”。
3. so...that 结果状语从句：“so important that he couldn't stop working”“so concentrated on translating that he didn't realize”中 so...that 表示“如此……以至于”，引导结果状语从句。
4. 动名词作宾语：“couldn't stop working”“on translating”“was eating ink”中 stop/on/was 后接动名词。
5. be going to do：“It's going to take me weeks”中 be going to do 表示“将要做某事”。
6. when 时间状语从句（省略主语+be）：“when dipped in the brown sugar sauce”中 when dipped 是 when they are dipped 的省略。
