The machines have dug the hill into a crater, but they still cannot reach the foxes. Now the three farmers try a new plan: they will camp at the hole day and night and starve the foxes out. Now read “We’ll Never Let Him Go” and listen to their solemn oath.
Roald Dahl loves a vow — a promise so big it drives the whole story. In Chapter 7 the farmers are too tired to dig any more, so Bean declares “We starve him out” and they swear a solemn oath. Dahl also uses repetition (反复) — “Never never never!” — and a simile (明喻): “dead as a dingbat”. When people swear, they mean business — and the danger grows.
The fox family dug for dear life, deeper and deeper, and escaped the shovels. Mrs Fox said the golden line: “Your father is a fantastic fox.” But at sunrise the next morning, Boggis, Bunce and Bean are still digging — and they are not giving up.
The farmers swear they will never let Mr Fox go. What do you think their next move will be?第七章叫《We'll Never Let Him Go 我们绝不会放他走》。

Two more questions after reading ·
1. What do the three farmers swear to do?
2. What does Bean decide to do at the end?

At six o’clock in the evening, Bean switched off the motor of his tractor and climbed down from the driver’s seat. Bunce did the same. Both men had had enough. They were tired and stiff from driving the tractors all day. They were also hungry. Slowly they walked over to the small fox’s hole in the bottom of the huge crater. Bean’s face was purple with rage. Bunce was cursing the fox with dirty words that cannot be printed. Boggis came waddling up. “Dang and blast that filthy stinking fox!” he said. “What the heck do we do now?”

“I’ll tell you what we don’t do,” Bean said. “We don’t let him go!”
“We’ll never let him go!” Bunce declared.
“Never never never!” cried Boggis.
“Did you hear that, Mr Fox!” yelled Bean, bending low and shouting down the hole. “It’s not over yet, Mr Fox! We’re not going home till we’ve strung you up dead as a dingbat!” Whereupon the three men all shook hands with one another and swore a solemn oath that they would not go back to their farms until the fox was caught.

“What’s the next move?” asked Bunce, the pot-bellied dwarf.
“We’re sending you down the hole to fetch him up,” said Bean. “Down you go, you miserable midget!”
“Not me!” screamed Bunce, running away.

Bean made a sickly smile. When he smiled you saw his scarlet gums. You saw more gums than teeth. “Then there’s only one thing to do,” he said. “We starve him out. We camp here day and night watching the hole. He’ll come out in the end. He’ll have to.”

So Boggis and Bunce and Bean sent messages down to their farms asking for tents, sleeping-bags and supper.

Bean's face was purple with rage. ... When he smiled you saw his scarlet gums. You saw more gums than teeth.
Purple face and scarlet gums — colour does the describing. "More gums than teeth" is a scary, unforgettable close-up of a villain.
"We'll never let him go!" Bunce declared. "Never never never!" cried Boggis.
Repeating "never" three times turns a promise into a chant. Repetition makes the oath feel solemn and unstoppable.
Whereupon the three men all shook hands with one another and swore a solemn oath.
Shaking hands and swearing an oath — a formal, almost ceremonial action. Two gestures show this is no small grudge but a holy war.
Both men had had enough. They were tired and stiff from driving the tractors all day.
The narrator steps into both farmers' minds at once: tired, stiff, hungry. Even villains have limits — and they push past them.
Bean made a sickly smile. When he smiled you saw his scarlet gums. You saw more gums than teeth.
A "sickly smile" turns friendliness into a threat. The detail of scarlet gums and more gums than teeth makes the villain's expression grotesque and unforgettable.
At six o’clock in the evening, Bean switched off the motor of his tractor and climbed down from the driver’s seat. ... Slowly they walked over to the small fox’s hole in the bottom of the huge crater.
Time and place set the mood: evening, the bottom of a huge crater, two tired men walking slowly. The quiet "slowly" makes the moment feel heavy — night is falling and the siege is beginning.
Bean’s face was purple with rage. Bunce used language that cannot be printed. Boggis came stumping up: “What do we do now?”
How it expands ·
“We’ll never let him go!” ... “Never, never, never!” ... They shook hands and made a solemn vow.
“Go on down, you poor little midget!” Bunce shrieked “No, I won’t!” and ran away.
How it expands ·
A thin sickly smile spread over Bean’s face ... “We shall starve him out. ... In the end he must come out. He has to come out.”
短句收尾(must, has to)把威胁砸实。
They sent messages to their farms: tents, sleeping-bags and supper — they were really going to stay.
How it expands ·
First / Then / Next / Also / Finally 把六句话串起来;讲到 “Never never never!”

一个词连说三遍,像三记重锤:never → never → never。
until the fox was caught
He'll come out in the end.(他最后会出来。)He'll have to.(他必须出来。)最后三个词 He'll have to.

P1Both men had had enough. P2they would not go back ... until the fox was caught. P3After they had been driving all day ...
1When I arrived, the bus ___ (leave) already.
2He told me he ___ (finish) his homework.
1. had left——
2. had finished——
3. By six o'clock they had been driving the tractors all day.——had been driving
规则:not ... until ...
P2We’re not going home until we’ve strung you up dead. They would not go back until the fox was caught.
1He didn’t go to bed ___ he finished his homework. (until / when)
2I won’t leave ___ you come back. (until / because)
1. until——
2. until——
3. They didn't go home until they had caught the fox.——not...until
本章常见:waddling up(边走边摇)、screamed ... running away(边尖叫边跑)、sent ... asking for(写信要求)。
P1Boggis came waddling up. P3“Not me!” screamed Bunce, running away. P5sent messages ... asking for tents.
1She ran out of the room, ___ (cry).
2He sat by the fire, ___ (read) a book.
2. reading——
3. He screamed, running away.——screamed 是主句,running away 表伴随。
He’ll have to (come out). = He’ll have to come out.
P4He’ll come out in the end. He’ll have to. (= have to come out) P1“What the heck do we do now?” — 口语里 the heck 代替 the hell,避免脏话。
He'll have to.
1“Can you come?” — “I’ll ___ (try).”
2She must go now. She really ___ (have to).
3把 “He’ll have to come out” 改成省略句。
1. try——I'll try (to come) 的省略。
2. has to——has to (go now) 的省略。
3. He'll have to.——省略 come out,意思不变,更干脆。
