The farmers have camped around Mr Fox’s hole and sworn to catch him. Now the siege tightens: one hundred and eight men surround the whole hill. Down in the tunnel, the fox family grows hungrier and hungrier. Now read “The Foxes Begin to Starve” and feel the silence inside the hole.
Roald Dahl loves a feast — and he loves to tease his readers with it. In Chapter 8 the farmers eat a huge supper right above the hungry foxes: three boiled chickens, six doughnuts, two gallons of cider. Dahl piles up the food, then piles up the danger: one hundred and eight men, guns and flashlights, surround the hill. He also builds the suspense (悬念): the cubs cry “We’re so hungry!” — and their parents say nothing at all.
Bean tried to send Bunce down the hole to fetch the fox, but Bunce screamed “Not me!” and ran away. So Bean decided to starve the fox out: “We camp here day and night watching the hole.” The three men shook hands and swore a solemn oath — they would not go home until the fox was caught.
The foxes are trapped and starving. What do you think will happen next?第八章叫《The Foxes Begin to Starve 狐狸们开始挨饿》。

Two more questions after reading ·
1. What did Boggis tempt the fox with?
2. How many men surrounded the hill?

That evening three tents were put up in the crater on the hill — one for Boggis, one for Bunce and one for Bean. The tents surrounded Mr Fox’s hole. And the three farmers sat outside their tents eating their supper. Boggis had three boiled chickens smothered in dumplings, Bunce had six doughnuts filled with disgusting goose-liver paste, and Bean had two gallons of cider. All three of them kept their guns beside them.

Boggis picked up a steaming chicken and held it close to the fox’s hole. “Can you smell this, Mr Fox?” he shouted. “Lovely tender chicken! Why don’t you come up and get it?” The rich scent of chicken wafted down the tunnel to where the foxes were crouching.

“Oh, Dad,” said one of the Small Foxes, “couldn’t we just sneak up and snatch it out of his hand?” “Don’t you dare!” said Mrs Fox. “That’s just what they want you to do.” “But we’re so hungry!” they cried. “How long will it be till we get something to eat?” Their mother didn’t answer them. Nor did their father. There was no answer to give.

As darkness fell, Bunce and Bean switched on the powerful headlamps of the two tractors and shone them on to the hole. “Now,” said Bean, “we’ll take it in turn to keep watch. One watches while two sleep, and so on all through the night.” Boggis said, “What if the fox digs a hole right through the hill and comes out on the other side? You didn’t think of that one, did you?” “Of course I did,” said Bean, pretending he had. “Go on, then, tell us the answer,” said Boggis.

Bean picked something small and black out of his ear and flicked it away. “How many men have you got working on your farm?” he asked. “Thirty-five,” Boggis said. “I’ve got thirty-six,” Bunce said. “And I’ve got thirty-seven,” Bean said. “That makes one hundred and eight men altogether. We must order them to surround the hill. Each man will have a gun and a flashlight. There will be no escape then for Mr Fox.” So the order went down to the farms, and that night one hundred and eight men formed a tight ring around the bottom of the hill. They were armed with sticks and guns and hatchets and pistols and all sorts of other horrible weapons. This made it quite impossible for a fox or indeed for any other animal to escape from the hill. The next day, the watching and waiting went on. Boggis and Bunce and Bean sat upon small stools, staring at the fox’s hole. They didn’t talk much. They just sat there with their guns on their laps. Every so often, Mr Fox would creep a little closer towards the mouth of the tunnel and take a sniff. Then he would creep back again and say, “They’re still there.” “Are you quite sure?” Mrs Fox would ask. “Positive,” said Mr Fox. “I can smell that man Bean a mile away. He stinks.”

Boggis had three boiled chickens smothered in dumplings, Bunce had six doughnuts filled with disgusting goose-liver paste, and Bean had two gallons of cider.
Each farmer's supper matches his body: huge Boggis eats huge food, tiny Bunce eats sweet junk, clever Bean drinks cider. Food describes character.
"Can you smell this, Mr Fox?" he shouted. "Lovely tender chicken! Why don't you come up and get it?"
Boggis uses food as a weapon, pretending to be friendly. Speech that sounds kind but is a trap shows a sly side of the farmer.
Boggis picked up a steaming chicken and held it close to the fox's hole.
One deliberate action — holding the hot chicken at the hole — makes the temptation almost real. We can smell it with the foxes.
There was no answer to give.
The parents' silence says everything: hungry, but no safe answer exists. Five words of inner emptiness are heavier than any speech.
Boggis and Bunce and Bean sat upon small stools, staring at the fox's hole. They didn't talk much. They just sat there with their guns on their laps.
Expression through stillness: staring, not talking, guns on laps. Silence is the farmers' mood — patient, stubborn and a little absurd.
That evening three tents were put up in the crater on the hill — one for Boggis, one for Bunce and one for Bean. The tents surrounded Mr Fox's hole.
Tents in a crater: home comforts brought into a battlefield. The image of the three tents surrounding the tiny hole shows the siege — many against one.
Boggis ate three boiled chickens ... Bunce ate six doughnuts ... Bean drank two gallons of cider. ... All three had their guns beside them.
How it expands ·
“Mr Fox! Just smell this! A lovely tender chicken! Won’t you come up and get it?”
How it expands · 怎么展开:围绕 smell / come up 展开:先给声音(甜言蜜语),再给气味(香飘入洞)。
“But we are so hungry!” ... Mother did not answer. Father did not answer. There was no answer to give.
How it expands ·
“What if the fox digs through the hill and comes out the other side?” ... “I did think of that,” Bean said, pretending that he had.
How it expands ·
“We will order them to surround the hill! Every man with a gun and a flashlight!” ... “I can smell that Bean fellow from a mile away!”
How it expands ·
First / Then / Next / Also / Finally 把六句话串起来;讲到帐篷里的三份大餐(three boiled chickens / six doughnuts / two gallons of cider)时放慢,报菜名一样报出来;讲到 108 这个数字时拖长、加重:one hundred and eight——数字越大,危险越大!

(Can you...? Why don’t you...?)——像钓鱼下钩;狐狸太太只用一句 Don’t you dare!
There was no answer to give.
1. What did Boggis have for supper?
2. Who had two gallons of cider?
3. How many men surrounded the hill?
4. Why did Boggis hold the chicken close to the fox’s hole?
5. Why did Mrs Fox say “Don’t you dare!”?
6. Why did Bean want 108 men to surround the hill?
7. Do you think the foxes will come out for the chicken? Why or why not?
8. Why did the parents say nothing when the cubs cried “We’re so hungry!”?
9. The next chapter is called “Mr Fox Has a Plan”. What do you think the plan will be?
Chapter 8 is a siege of temptation: instead of digging, the farmers use food as bait, tractor beams as night watch, and one hundred and eight men to ring the hill. The cubs rush, the mother holds them back; the children cry with hunger, the parents answer in silence. The harder the trap, the more patience it takes — and when Mr Fox creeps to the mouth of the tunnel again and again, he is not going for the chicken. He is scouting.

P3Don’t you dare! said Mrs Fox. P2Why don’t you come up and get it?(don’t
Don't you dare! 是「否定祈使句 + 主语加强」——比 Don't do it!
1___ (not, run) in the corridor!
2Don’t ___ (touch) that hot pan!
3. Don't move! / Don't you dare move!——祈使句省略主语 you,直接 Don't + 动词原形。
is it? / aren’t they?
P4You didn’t think of that one, did you? P3couldn’t we just sneak up…?(couldn’t
Boggis 说 “You didn't think of that one, did you?”——前否定、后肯定,是拿话激 Bean:你没想到吧?
1You are hungry, ___ (aren’t / are) you?
2She didn’t see us, ___ (didn’t / did) she?
1. aren't——前肯定 are,后否定 aren't you?
2. did——前否定 didn't,后肯定 did she?
3. You didn't think of that, did you?——前否定后肯定,句尾用 did you。
P5Mr Fox would creep a little closer… Then he would creep back again and say, “They’re still there.” “Are you quite sure?” Mrs Fox would ask.
would creep / would ask
1When I was little, I ___ (play) in the park every day.
2Grandpa would ___ (tell) us stories at night.
3. He would creep to the mouth of the hole and take a sniff.——would creep
There is / are / was / were + 名词 表示「某处存在某物」。名词是单数/不可数用 is / was,复数用 are / were。There was no answer to give.=没有答案可给。
P3There was no answer to give. P5There will be no escape then for Mr Fox.
1There ___ (is / are) two tractors in the field.
2There ___ (was / were) no water in the tunnel.
1. are——two tractors 是复数,用 are。
2. was——water 不可数,用 was。
3. There is no food here.——there be + no + 不可数名词。
