The tunnel rushes on, and Mr Fox cries: "Just one more visit!" The Smallest Fox bets he knows where: Bean’s farm! But Badger stops digging and asks the question nobody has asked: "Doesn’t this worry you just a tiny bit, Foxy? All this…this stealing." Mr Fox answers with his own question: "Do you know anyone in the whole world who wouldn’t swipe a few chickens if his children were starving to death?" Badger thinks deeply — then smiles: "Foxy, I love you." Five minutes later his paws hit something flat and hard: a wall, underground! "Very simple," says Mr Fox. "It’s the wall of an underground room — and if I am not mistaken, it is exactly what I’m looking for." Now read "Badger Has Doubts" and watch a moral debate end in a secret door.
Roald Dahl writes the quietest chapter of the book — a moral debate inside a tunnel. Before any more stealing, Badger stops and asks: is this wrong? Dahl never makes Mr Fox a saint; he makes him a clever, loving father who can defend his choices. The debate is Dahl’s own ethics in a nutshell: we take only what keeps our families alive, and we never kill. And the chapter ends with the two simplest words of friendship in children’s literature: "Foxy, I love you."
In Chapter 13, the animals broke into Bunce’s Mighty Storehouse — "I’ve hit it smack on the nose!" Mr Fox did the choosing: four plump ducks, three magnificent hams, a side of bacon — and ten bunches of carrots for the Rabbits! Two of the Small Foxes rushed the push-carts home to their mother: "Tell her the rest of us will be home as soon as we’ve done one more little job." And now, with Badger helping and the tunnel flying on, Mr Fox announces the next stop: "Just one more visit!"
Badger is a kind, gentle animal — and suddenly the stealing worries him. "Doesn’t this worry you just a tiny bit, Foxy?" he asks. How do you think Mr Fox will answer?

“Just one more visit!” cried Mr Fox. “And I’ll bet I know where that’ll be,” said the only Small Fox now left. He was the Smallest Fox of them all.

“Where?” asked Badger. “Well,” said the Smallest Fox. “We’ve been to Boggis and we’ve been to Bunce but we haven’t been to Bean. It must be Bean.” “You are right,” said Mr Fox. “But what you don’t know is which part of Bean’s place we are about to visit.” “Which?” they said both together. “Ah-ha,” said Mr Fox. “Just you wait and see.” They were digging as they talked. The tunnel was going forward fast.

“Doesn’t this worry you just a tiny bit, Foxy?” asked Badger. “All this . . . stealing.” Mr Fox stopped digging and stared at Badger as though he had gone completely dotty. “My dear old furry frump,” he said, “do you know anyone in the whole world who wouldn’t swipe a few chickens if his children were starving to death?” There was a short silence while Badger thought deeply about this. “You are far too respectable,” said Mr Fox.

“There’s nothing wrong with being respectable,” Badger said. “Look,” said Mr Fox, “Boggis and Bunce and Bean are out to kill us. You realize that, I hope?” “I do, Foxy, I do indeed,” said the gentle Badger. “But we’re not going to stoop to their level. We don’t want to kill them.” “I should hope not, indeed,” said Badger. “We wouldn’t dream of it,” said Mr Fox. “We shall simply take a little food here and there to keep us and our families alive. Right?” “I suppose we’ll have to,” said Badger. “If they want to be horrible, let them,” said Mr Fox. “We down here are decent peace-loving people.”

Badger laid his head on one side and smiled at Mr Fox. “Foxy,” he said, “I love you.” “Thank you,” said Mr Fox. “And now let’s get on with the digging.”

Five minutes later, Badger’s front paws hit against something flat and hard. “What on earth is this?” he said. “It looks like a solid stone wall.” He and Mr Fox scraped away the soil. It was a wall. But it was built of bricks, not stones. The wall was right in front of them, blocking their way. “Now who in the world would build a wall under the ground?” asked Badger. “Very simple,” said Mr Fox. “It’s the wall of an underground room. And if I am not mistaken, it is exactly what I’m looking for.”

“Doesn’t this worry you just a tiny bit, Foxy? All this . . . this stealing.”
"Just a tiny bit" — the small phrase makes the big question gentle. Badger does not shout or judge; he asks quietly, and the dots in "All this . . . this stealing" show him searching for the word. This is the first time in the book that anyone stops to ask whether the raids are right.
There was a short silence while Badger thought deeply about this.
Dahl writes the thinking as a pause: no answer, no argument — just a short silence. The conscience works slowly, and "deeply" tells us the answer will not be easy. This silence is the heart of the chapter: the moment between the question and the trust.
“Do you know anyone in the whole world who wouldn’t swipe a few chickens if his children were starving to death?”
Mr Fox does not say "yes" or "no" — he asks a question that answers itself. "Anyone in the whole world" makes the answer universal: nobody. The defence works not by arguing but by making the listener agree with his own heart.
Badger laid his head on one side and smiled at Mr Fox. “Foxy, I love you.”
Laid his head on one side — the tilt of the head is the whole answer. Badger has made up his mind; the smile is trust, not just agreement. Dahl films the body before the words: the gentle Badger wins the debate in the way he moves, not in what he says.
Mr Fox stopped digging and stared at Badger as though he had gone completely dotty.
Stopped, stared — two verbs that freeze the tunnel. The digging stops at the exact moment the question lands, and the stare says "this question is impossible" before a single word. Dahl turns a moral surprise into a physical one: even the clever fox needs a second to catch up.
The wall was right in front of them, blocking their way. “Now who in the world would build a wall under the ground?”
The wall is written as a blocker: right in front, blocking the way. The tunnel — their safe, familiar world — suddenly ends at something built by human hands. The setting is a mystery made of bricks: it stops the animals, asks the question, and points the story toward the next chapter.
“Just one more visit!” cried Mr Fox.
How it expands · 怎么展开:围绕 one more 展开:一个悬念开场——再来一处,去哪?最小的小狐狸接住谜语(It must be Bean),爸爸再抛新谜(which part)。
“Doesn’t this worry you just a tiny bit, Foxy? All this . . . this stealing.”
“Do you know anyone in the whole world who wouldn’t swipe a few chickens if his children were starving to death?”
We shall simply take a little food here and there to keep us and our families alive."
Badger laid his head on one side and smiled at Mr Fox. “Foxy, I love you.”
How it expands · 怎么展开:用「短句」收束辩论:三个词,没有解释;歪头是动作、微笑是答案——辩论以信任作结,随后立刻回到挖洞(let’s get on with the digging)。

反复的"We’ve been to"划掉两座,没去的那一座独自突出——比恩。"It must be Bean"的结论,因为前面的反复而显得不可争辩。
中西对照小发现:英文 one more visit 就是中文「悬念入题」,the question that answers itself 就是「反问」,the missing farm 的反复就是「反复/排比」,kill against kill 就是「对比」,the tilt of the head 就是「神态白描」,golden line 的短句告白就是「以少胜多」。

The chapter is not really about stealing: it is about knowing why you do what you do, and trusting your friend enough to say "I love you."

狐狸爸爸不答"对/不对",一句反问让獾先生(和读者)自己点头——Do you know anyone who wouldn’t swipe a few chickens if his children were starving to death?
P3“Do you know anyone in the whole world who wouldn’t swipe a few chickens if his children were starving to death?”
Who wouldn’t...?
1. wouldn’t(谁会不想活在没有书的世界里?——没有人会想。)
2. any(谁拒绝得了这样的礼物?——没人拒绝得了。)
本章的假设是:if his children were starving to death(要是他的孩子们快饿死了)——这是推想,不是事实,所以用 were 不用 is。
P3Do you know anyone ... who wouldn’t swipe a few chickens if his children were starving to death?
1. were(if + were:要是我是一只鸟……——非真实假设,用 were。)
2. rained(if + 过去式 rained:要是明天下雨,我们就待在家——假设句。)
规则:as though / as if + 过去完成式 表示"仿佛……
P3Mr Fox stopped digging and stared at Badger as though he had gone completely dotty.
as though he had gone:仿佛他(已经)疯了——as though + 过去完成式,表示与事实相反的比较(他没疯)。
1. knew(as though + 过去式 knew:他说话的样子,仿佛什么都懂——其实不是。)
2. were(as though + were:她看我的眼神,仿佛我疯了。)
狐狸爸爸的宣言:we’re not going to stoop to their level(我们不打算降到他们的水平)——这是决定,也是底线;will 常表临时决定,be going to 强调"早就想好了"。
P4“But we’re not going to stoop to their level.” P2“which part of Bean’s place we are about to visit”
are not going to stoop:不打算屈尊(be going to + 原形);are about to visit:正要拜访(be about to = 即将)。
1. are(we are going to + 原形:我们打算下一个去比恩的农场。)
2. give(be going to + 动词原形 give:我不打算放弃。)
